Sushruta Samhita Uttaratantra Chapter 32 Pūtanāgraha Pratişedha (Therapy of Pütanāgraha)

  Acharya Sushruta has described the remedy of Putana Graha within the 32nd chapter of Uttara Tantra.

  For Parisechana – Kapotavankadi Kashaya (Kapotavanka, Araluka, Varuna, Paribhadraka and Asphota) is used.

  For preparation of Taila (for use for anointing and so forth) – Vachadi Taila (Vacha, Vayastha, Golomi, Haritala, Manassila, Kustha and Sarjarasa) is used.

  For Ghrta (panartha) – Tugakshiri Ghrta, Madhura Gana Siddha Ghrta or Kusthadi Ghrta (Kustha, Talisa, Khadira and Chandana) is used.

  For Dhupana – Devadarvadi Dhupana (Devadaru, Vacha, Hingu, Kustha, Girikadamba, Ela and Harenu) or Gandhanakulyadi Dhupana (Gandhanakuli, Kumbhika, Badara Majja, bones of crabs and ghee and Sarshapa) are used.

  For Dharana – Amulets of Kakadani, Citraphala, Bimbi and Gunja are tied.

  For Bali – Oblations are given with rice cooked with fish, krsara and palala. They need to all be stored inside a field or earthen saucers and supplied in a VACANT HOUSE.

  For Snana – ABHISHEKA JALA must be used for bathing.

  Options of Goddess Putana – Wears soiled garments, has soiled and tough hairs, resides in vacant homes, is ugly in look, emits dangerous odor, seems to be terrifying like darkish clouds and resides in damaged homes.

The thirty second chapter of Uttaratantra of Sushruta Samhita is called as Pūtanāgraha Pratişedha Adhyaya. This chapter offers with the Therapy of Pütanāgraha.  

अथातः पूतनाप्रतिषेधं व्याख्यास्यामः ||१||
यथोवाच भगवान् धन्वन्तरिः ||२||

We’ll now expound Pütanã (graha) pratişedha – remedy of the kid seized by Pütanãgraha; as revealed by the venerable Dhañvañtari.

Parisecana, Taila

कपोतवङ्काऽरलुको वरुणः पारिभद्रकः |
आस्फोता चैव योज्याः स्युर्बालानां परिषेचने ||३||
वचा वयःस्था गोलोमी हरितालं मनःशिला |
कुष्ठं सर्जरसश्चैव तैलर्थे वर्ग इष्यते ||४||

Parisecana – Decoction must be ready with the under talked about substances and be used to wash / bathe the kid –

        Kapotavanka

        Araluka

        Varuna

        Paribhadraka

        Asphota

Taila – Oil for anointing or giving therapeutic massage to the physique of the kid by Putana Graha must be ready with the under talked about herbs –

        Vacā,

        Vayasthā,

        Golomi,

        Haritāla,

        Manaśśilā,

        Kustha and

        Sarjarasa

Ghrta

हितं घृतं तुगाक्षीर्यां सिद्धं मधुरकेषु  |
कुष्ठतालीशखदिरचन्दनस्यन्दने तथा ||५||

Ghee administered for consuming / licking by the kid must be ready with the under talked about substances –

        Tugakshiri

        Madhura Gana / Kakolyadi Gana group of herbs or

        Kustha, Talisa, Khadira and Candana

Dhupana, Dharana

देवदारुवचाहिङ्गुकुष्ठं गिरिकदम्बकः |
एला हरेणवश्चापि योज्या उद्धूपने सदा ||६||
गन्धनाकुलिकुम्भीके मज्जानो बदरस्य  |
कर्कटास्थि घृतं चापि धूपनं सर्षपैः सह ||७||
काकादनीं चित्रफलां बिम्बीं गुञ्जां च धारयेत् |

Dhupana Beneath talked about recipes shall be used for offering fumigation to the kid by Putana Graha –

        Devadaru, Vaca, Hingu, Kustha, Girikadamba, Ela and Harenu

        Gandhanakuli, Kumbhika, Badara majja, Bones of crabs and Ghee and Sarsapa

Dharana – Amulets of Kakadani, Citraphala (Indravaruni), Bimbi and Gunja must be tied on the arms / physique of the kid.

Bali

मत्स्यौदनं  कुर्वीत कृशरां पललं तथा |
शरावसम्पुटे कृत्वा बलिं शून्यगृहे हरेत् ||८||

Oblations to Putana Graha must be given with rice cooked with fish, Krsara – rice cooked with inexperienced or black grams, Palala – meat. The supplies talked about within the oblations must be stored inside a field or earthen saucers and shall be supplied to Putana Graha in a vacant home.

Snana, Puja

उच्छिष्टेनाभिषेकेण शिशोः स्नपनमिष्यते |
पूज्या  पूतना देवी बलिभिः सोपहारकैः ||९||
मलिनाम्बरसंवीता मलिना रूक्षमूर्धजा |
शून्यागाराश्रिता देवी दारकं पातु पूतना ||१०||
दुर्दर्शना सुदुर्गन्धा कराला मेघकालिका |
भिन्नगाराश्रया देवी दारकं पातु पूतना ||११||

Water which stays or is collected after bathing the Gods shall be used to wash the kid by Putana Graha. After providing oblations, Goddess Putana must be worshipped as – ‘Goddess Putana, you, carrying soiled garments even have soiled and tough hairs. You reside in vacant homes. Please defend this little one. Goddess Putana, you’ve gotten ugly look, emit a foul odor, look terrifying like darkish clouds and reside in damaged homes. Please defend the kid.’

इति श्रीसुश्रुतसंहितायामुत्तरतन्त्रान्तर्गते कुमारतन्त्रे (षष्ठोऽध्यायः, आदितः) द्वात्रिंशोऽध्यायः।।३२||

Thus ends the thirty second chapter by title Putana Pratişedha in Uttara sthana of Suśruta Samhita.
